G73JH Beginner Repasting Results

I have spent weeks trying to decide if I should repaste my G73JH and spent hours watching movies and reading about it and finally after a lot of help from many people on this forum including DCX (+1) rep to you buddy I bit the bullet and went for it. I also was not troubled by the main G73JH repasting forum post from the people refusing to believe repasting is necessary and I listened closely to Chastity's advice (+1) and this all sung true throughout my experience.



I have never dissasembled an entire laptop before only repasted a simple CPU and at first attempt it took me 2 hours to complete taking my time and by keeping my keyboard in pristine condition and for those who like me are hitting the 100oC+ mark under furmark burn in I can now say I highly recommend doing it.



Here are my results.



Began with BIOS 213 Latest VBIOS and Drivers 11.2. Original Asus Pasting



Before applying Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound



Idle CPU: 52oC Full load all cores: 83oC

Idle GPU: GPU 48oC MEM(IO) 54oC Full load (gaming): GPU 78oC MEM(IO) 85oC (Furmark 1.9.0 Extreme Burn in + Post FX Full HD) (5mins): GPU 92oC MEM(IO) 101oC ..ended benchmark at 102oC..



I had no problems at all at getting the mobo took my time and was very careful a very thin flathead screwdriver is very helpful and take a good 5 minutes on the keyboard its worth it gently pry it up saves you 40. Fans were full of dust and hair which helped cleaning them out. I also was having the left mouse button sticking against something this was just a piece of tape which I replaced and very glad I did.



Once at the mobo here are pictures of the CPU and GPU as you can see patchy and bubbles were visible in the left hand corner of the GPU the paste itself was so dry it practically crumbled when I went to remove it. The CPU had no coverage at all I couldnt believe it I thought it must be on the heatsink nope they had bearly put enough paste on to cover it and it settled mainly in the centre. Sorry the pictures arent great.

I applied the paste the size of a pea onto the GPU and a very short line across the CPU the size of a pea also and then when replacing the heatsink I made sure to rotate slightly to even out the paste and then rebolt in numerical order as listed on the heatsink.



Results immediately after repasting:



Idle CPU: 46oC - 6oC Full load all cores: 72oC - 10oC

Idle GPU: GPU 45oC - 3oC MEM(IO) 50oC - 4oC Full load (gaming): GPU 70oC - 8oC MEM(IO) 76oC - 9oC



(Furmark 1.9.0 Extreme Burn in + Post FX Full HD) (5mins): GPU 78oC - 14oC MEM(IO) 86oC - 15oC



The difference from the max temperature when using burn in was the biggest gain I had im pretty sure removing the dust and hair from the Fan was a big help but it just shows how well the paste has helped to maintain the temperature as it flickered between 83-84oC once the fans reached near 4000RPM but it never needed to kick in at full speed during the burn in which is outstanding for me.



Arctic Silver 5 also needs a long time before perfect results are given so I may get another gain of 1 or 2oC from this also. Overall im very pleased I did this and have no regrets because this will surely prolong the life of my laptop.

After further testing im now sitting at a steady 45oC idle for my GPU maxing at 85oC highest temp and for my CPU is 48oC maxing at 71oC so as a man from britain im "chuffed"



Also I noticed that my sticky mouse problem has been solved (the mouse acting iratic for no reason), my mouse was practically unusable and I noticed that the left side of my touchpad that when pushed it was sticking against something along with the left mouse button. I reirected the cables around the touchpad inside and removed the pieces of sticky tape around it that were attached to it but not doing anything and this has seemed to solve the problem. I would normally get this happen every few hours and in 24 not once. Hope this helps.

You should have used something better like IC Diamond 7 or something. I've got that and mine runs cool

Arctic Silver is fine and 46oC idle 71oC gaming and 85oC Xtreme burn in is pretty cool. For the 5870 at least.

The difference between pepsi and coke is more pronounced than the difference between the thermal transference of ICD and AS5.



In fact, the difference in colour between 000100 and 010001 is more pronounced. And I'm not talking hex codes. I'm talking about the colour of the numbers.

I just ran FurMark on my G73JH and it took it all of 1 minute to run up to 110 C and shut down. I was moving my mouse to the quit button as it shut down, guess I need to be quicker next time.

That's a problem! You can either do a repaste on your own, or send it off for warranty work.
