Tracert vs. Telnet to check website connectivity

On diagnosing a problem connecting to a website I have a tracert that appears to fail at an intermediary server (not the target domain) but a Telnet to the target domain completes. Is it possible for the domain where the tracert stops to be filtering out the IP (perhaps due to out of date bogon filter) but for Telnet to go through, or is completion of the Telnet an indication that the problem is at the target domain? More than likely there is a firewall that is blocking the traceroute. Because people can run denial of service attacks a lot of firewalls block ping and traceroute. Even seeing * at intermediate nodes means little other than the device refuses to respond.
If telnet works it means end to end there is a valid connection.

I did know that rcmp packets are often not acknowledged but are still passed through. In this case the tracert did not just go to asterisks for a few hops but ended before the target. Seems strange that telnet can get through but I will request the admin at the target domain to take another look - said it's not them initially.

The key is understanding what exactly is being send back. The entries in traceroute are messaged that say time to live exceeded. A traceroute will end when it sees a port unreachable message. A firewall can either just drop the traffic and say nothing and you will get row after row of star entries or it can send back a unreachable message even though it is a lie.
When you get a firewall in the path you cannot trust the output of many diagnostic tools.

The symptom you talk about also happens when you pass though a nat router or many types of load balances that share addresses with multiple machines. Since telnet and traceroute use different ports the router/load may send it to a different device of may itself respond that it does not know which terminates a traceroute.

I am writing this after trying tons of things and doing lots of research on the web and making too many purchases to try and get this to work. And I have still had no luck in doing this properly

So, I was wondering if you can help me out here. I really want to get this done, and I am so close to figuring it out!

Here is what's going on:

I have bought a Samsung LCD TV, and I am trying to install a wireless headphone on it, for my dad, who used to use headphones all the time with the previous TV.

1. This TV has a digital optical audio out exit at the back it.

2. I have bought a wireless senheisser headphone that comes with analog rca audio cables and a digital audio cable. The headphone's transmitter has a "digital in" audio cable.
So, the TV's optical audio signal has to be converted in a way to digital audio out. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
In order to achieve this, I have bought a TOSLINK optical audio to coaxial (rca) converter, along with a toslink optical cable that goes IN the converter. And what comes OUT of the converter is the digital cable, mentioned previously, that came with the headphone purchase.

So, altogether, the TOSLINK optical audio cable is connected to TV, from one side, and connected to the converter from the other side. Then, I have the headphone's digital audio connected to the OUT side of the converter, and the other side connected to wireless transmitter.

With this setting, I turn on the headphone and put it on my head, but still no sound!

My guess is that the problem is either with the optical audio cable or the converter. Because I have tested the headphone and know it is working without the optical devices.

Converters may be expensive, and you might not need it.

What model is the TV? If you're watching TV, look behind where the right speaker would be - there should be a square label that looks like this:

The converter itself wasn't that expensive, around $15. The wireless headphone was expensive, though, $215.00.

The headphone I have is a sennheiser RS 180, if that helps.

Okay, so rather than sending the signal through the TV speakers, we want to send it to the external speakers, in this case the headphones. We'll change the settings in the TV with the remote by pressing on the remote:

Menu > Sound > Speaker Select > External

Now, you were correct in that there's only an optical out on this specific model of TV. So the optical converter is going to be necessary in this case. (Most of our TVs also have RCA outs, but not this specific model).

Also, I referenced the model from the Sennheiser instructions here, which seems to be the setup instructions for the RS180, but I can't officially confirm that (because it's not a Samsung product, please understand why I have to be all formal on this).

Seems like everything else (RCA) would be connected properly, though if you don't have that manual, try referencing that to see if it works.

The way I see it, the TV setting listed above may be the only thing keeping you from getting the audio signal.

I just tried the TV settings that you mentioned and still it didn't work
The TV sound went mute, but I didn't hear anything on the headphones.
Anyways, that wasn't the ideal situation in the first place. I would want to have both TV and headphone speakers on.

Do you have any other suggestions on what could be wrong? I keep thinking it is the model of the other components.

The problem is likely at the converter level. Typically this would be something that would be supported by a receiver. Even a bookshelf stereo system with optical in would probably be able to provide the connectivity you're looking for.

The other possibility, and this is a slight one, would be that the optical signal isn't working. In the back of the TV, you should see a red light emitting from the optical port.

The more probable possibility would be that the optical cord is faulty.

Without testing it, I can't determine. Sorry.

I do see a red light emitting out of the optical cable, so I know it is working. But I have doubted the converter functionality as well.

Anyways, I thought of a new way to tackle this issue. Doing this directly from the TV audio out (even if it worked), means I can either get TV speaker OR external speaker, which is not what I want.

So, I was wondering if you can help me out with my new plan.
The satellite receiver that we use, has one set of Red and White RCA audio outs. Currently, these are connected to the back of the TV via a set of rca cables.
Now, since I want to get both TV input and headphone input from this receiver, I was thinking that I should buy a device, that I can connect both these rca audio cables AND the rca cables from the headphone to, and through a third set of rca cables, connect this to the back of the receiver. That way I can get sound from both TV and speaker.
Do you have an idea on how I can do this and what kind of device would do that for me? Please remember that I need to get both tv and headphone audio at the same time.

ASUS G72GX Stuttering

I purchased a refurbished G72GX on newegg a little less than a month ago. (also my first laptop) There hasn't been an issues up until about a week ago. I noticed while I was playing WoW my laptop would stutter 1-2 times then drop to unplayable levels where I would have to full power down and then reboot. It only did this once or twice in the last week so I didn't think much of it besides maybe overheating because the laptop does run a little hot.



Then it happened again while just simply browsing the net and listening to my iTunes. The sound will stutter along with everything else. But now it does it regardless of whatever I'm doing within 10 minutes of rebooting. I've read that sound drivers sometimes conflict, I removed all the creative software to no avail, I have also reinstalled all the drivers to also no avail.



I was just curious if anyone else has had this problem and has any solutions before I just decide to pack it back up and RMA it before my 30 day warranty is over.

if they are really bad (over 65C while idle) then get some canned air and blow out the vents

need some help with UX50V

I helped clean-install a Win 7 SP1 for my friend on her UX50V. Everything went well, except that the nVidia driver have some issues (it has a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager), and I cannot figure out which driver should I download to make the keyboard Fn keys work, and how to have some OSD features.



Can you help me with these issues? Is there anything special with the nVidia driver install on these laptops, or I should just try DriverSweeping and reinstalling again? Does the Verde driver contain the Intel driver inside?

Problems with Inspiron1525 freezing and can't defrag

My computer will freeze, kind of. I can still move the mouse around but cannot get the hand to click on anything. I am running Vista and my task manager has stopped coming up for me. I researched that and have found a lot of people are saying that. So I have to shut down with the power button. Sometimes when I restart it will say they recommend that I have a disk checked for it's integrity or continuity, I forget. So I went to defrag to see if that would help at all and it ran overnight and was still running so I cancelled it. I tried again and it ran all day and I cancelled it. I must admit that I have not run it in a long time as I wrongly assumed my virus scanner was running it and just realized it does not. Can anyone help me with any or all of these problems? How long should I let the defrag run, how long is too long. With Vista you can't see the progress you just see that the circle is still moving which it has been each time I cancelled it. I am trying to stop what I am afraid is a major problem! Oh, one other thing, the asking me about checking a disk didn't start until after I had bought an external hard drive to move all of my pictures onto. I don't have it hooked up the the laptop anymore, it is on my desktop. Could that have anything to do with the message??? HELP!!!!

Help: Intel MacPro no longer recognizes External BU Drives

I need some help.
I use CalDigit VR Mini drives and SuperDuper to make bootable Backups of bothe the Leopard and Snow Leopard drives on my MacPro. These drive can connect either as eSATA via a supplied extender board which connects to the motherboard or via FW800.


A few months ago I toiok my Ma=cPro to an Apple store to have my original OEM upgraded ATI X1900XS video card replaced under warranty with an Envidia 8800.

A few weeks later when I tried to connect my exterbal CalDigit drives via eSATA I realized that my MacPro no longer recognized them. I just figured that the extender had become disconnected somehow when they swapped out the cards.

Yesterday I connected my external drive to my MacPro using FW800 to update my bootable backup. When my MacPro boots the CalDigit external drives are visible on the desktop of both the Leopard AND Snow Leopard OS and I am able to create a bootable backup...

BUT now (unlike before) when I have a bootable backup drive connected via FW800 and boot while holding down the OPTION key I only see my internal bootable drives and NOT the external FW800 drives. This also used to work even when my external drives were connected via eSATA.

Might anyone have an idea what might have happened or how to fix this functionality?

I had no system crash or power outage.... could this be a bios issue as the OPTION key boot used to give me the choice of external Bootable Backups before any operating system had actually loaded.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My initial thought is that if things weren't working exactly as they were when you took the system in to be worked on, you should take it back and tell them they broke something while working on it.

Given that to replace the video card they would have probably removed any other add-in cards, it's entirely possible they just didn't get it in all the way. The add-in slots are one of the few poorly designed aspects of the Mac Pro case.

There are a couple of oddities in your post, like why are you using SuperDuper to create multiple bootable backups? Having one of each for emergency purposes should be quite sufficient. After that, Time Machine should be able to do the job quite nicely. You can use a Time Machine backup to restore your system in a very similar fashion to SuperDuper, only Time Machine is far more efficient in its storage.

Moving on, the fact that the drives are visible in OS X means that they work fine, but the fact that they don't show up at the EFI (Macs don't have a BIOS, and yes it's kind of a potato-potahto distinction) boot picker means that they aren't bootable. You probably have some kind of setting wrong in SuperDuper. And before you give the knee-jerk response of how you've never touched those settings in 5 years, just check it anyway. And make sure the drives have a GUID partition table. Without that, they will not boot on a Mac with Intel CPU.

Also, another minor point: nVidia, not Envidia. Pronounced the same however, so easy mistake to make if you haven't ever seen it written.

And I suppose you could try clearing the PRAM. I highly doubt it will have any effect at all, but sometimes a bad PRAM setting can wreak all manner of havoc on a system. It takes all of 10 seconds to try, so not like you have much to lose.

Thanks for the reply....

The eSATA problem is a bit different as the eSATA ports are not actually using the slot. It has 2 cables that actually connect to the spare optical connectors on my Motherboard that would be used by an extra optical or blue-ray drive had I ever decided to add one. so unless he pulled both of those connectors off... and they look solid as far as I can see it is an EFI problem.

The VRMINI was indeed formatted originally with a GUID partition... I will start over again and make SURE that that partition is good.

I have a RAID 1 backup for both Leopard & Snow Leopard in case if one of my boot drives dies I will be able to keep on working.... At least that was the plan! The Drives had never failed to display in the past so it a new one on me. I have stopped using TM as I am more worried about a bad drive than erased files....

You made a mistake. You said, "And make sure the drives have a GUID partition table. Without that, they will not boot on a Mac with Intel CPU."
It is the other way around, a PPC Mac will not boot with a HDD formatted with GUID. An Intel Mac will boot with a HHD formatted with APM.

Fair enough, but it's not the sort of thing I would rely on. It may work now, but it may also disappear at any point in the future and it may also lead to unpredictable results. In fact, Apple just recently released an update to the SMC for the Mac Pros, and it's entirely possible that they removed this feature in addition to tweaking the fan settings. It wasn't mentioned in any of the notes I've seen for the update, but I also haven't gone looking to see if there are any ASP only sections to the KB article on it either. It's kind of academic given the OP says that the partition table was GUID. Even if the Apple store updated the SMC like they are supposed to with the video card replacement, and it did remove the APM boot option, if the partition table was GUID, it's not the source of the problem.

Unless you have a very specific reason for doing so, I'd rank this up there with installing smcFanControl and similar programs in terms of it being a bad idea.

This really sounds like there's just some issue with the way the backups are being made. For one reason or another, they're not bootable, and thus not showing up in the boot picker.

One detail I don't see, Hassiman, is whether or not your external drives are just singular drives, or if you have one of those fun little external drive bay devices where the drives are configured into a RAID 1 setup like the internal drives. I don't really know exactly how SuperDuper deals with RAID setups, but it stands to reason that if it's just creating a blind copy, then that copy thinks it's part of a RAID 1 setup, and is failing to find the second drive. It's even possible that SuperDuper is only copying data from one of the drives in the array, and when you go to look at them later via the OS, it's filling in the gaps from the internal drive. I've never used SuperDuper in a RAID setup, so this is just speculation along a logical line of thought. Something to consider anyway, unless someone has more detailed knowledge of this than I do.

Folks tend to get into this CPU upgrade stuff because games lag.

While it could be a CPU problem it's more likely to be a GPU problem....that's where the serious work is being done.

If this is a gaming issue?......you seem to have a rather old video card/cards.
Your list shows two video cards....I hope their strapped to run parallel mode....SLI?

Perhaps an upgrade in the GPU area might be of more benefit than the CPU area.

The CPU is not the bottleneck yet. But go fit it with 2GB RAM since you are sticking to 32Bit Windows.
